Miscellaneous Sets Archive

The timeline for scenic painting is often quite brief and the workspace is often shared with other technicians trying to complete their tasks in a crunch, so it’s sometimes difficult to get a good photograph of the set (with no actors, under a simple wash light). Here are a few shows I worked on where I only managed to capture a few images.

“The Electric Baby” Rorschach Theatre, April 2016
Written by Stefanie Zadravec, Directed by Randy Baker, Set design by Betsy Zuck
Spatter and Lightning? I didn’t get to relish this one very much as I was in the process of moving back the Shenandoah Valley at the time.

"Overnight paint call
bleeds into midmorning

the gentleman who cleans
the lobby & house brings the sunlight
with him into the black box

Oh wow! It looks so real!
I wish it could stay like this forever!"

A more difficult design with forced perspective and precise measurements, it took three of us to complete.

The bright stadium lights and intricate gobos achieved a powerful dramatic effect, but production stills of the paintwork were washed out.

I had the opportunity to work with Joe as assistant Set Designer as well as the Scenic Charge on this one. From previous experience, I knew that the small space of the Bethesda Writer’s Center often caused paint work to be washed out by the intensely saturated LED lighting. Given the timeless style the storyline required, I suggested we do the set in a grey scale to allow the projections and lights to take their appropriate focus. This show was a doozy, first time painting on Marley dance flooring and learned it took a lot longer to dry than the masonite flooring I was more accustomed to.

Twas a pleasure working alongside Props & Puppeteering Wizard Andrea “Dre” Moore on this show. She was up to her ears in props demands and let me paint this car cut-out (which was a nice break from the black&white world I asked for.

“You Or Whatever I Can Get” Flying V Theatre, February 2016
Written by Suzanne Edgar, Vaughn M. Irving, Farrell Parker, Steve Przybylski, Jason Schlafstein, and Doug Wilder
Directed by Jason Schlafstein, Music Direction by Steve Przybylski,
Set Design by Joseph Musumeci
A full scale musical with a revolving stage, the set itself designed to recall elements of the DC Metro System- Metro-esque map on the wall, and terra-cotta hexagon tiles on the stage apron. The grid of the Silver Spring Black Box created shadows that rendered photographs of the set difficult to take. Most production stills were focused tightly on the action.

When painting a Portal to Hell, you don't need much instruction- "buy all of Home Depot's Spray Foam" will suffice. — painting Sarah Ruhl's “Eurydice” at Nextstop Theatre Company in 2016.
